Water pump seal due to the characteristics of low leakage and no need for routine maintenance, has been widely replaced by the gland soft packing seal, water pump seal generally has two perpendicular to the axis of the rotary shaft sealing plane, so it can also be called "radial face seal". One of the sealing surface components is installed on the pump cover, end cover or pump body to remain stationary, and the other is fixed on the shaft and rotates with it. The stationary component is called the static ring component (also called the floating ring component in the static water pump seal), and the rotating component is called the moving ring (rotating ring) component. In order to keep the leakage within a very small range, in general, the grinding flatness tolerance of the rotating ring and stationary ring end faces of the conventional water pump seal is 0.0006.
In order to keep the heat and wear of the two surfaces due to friction within the allowable range, there must be a layer of fluid lubrication film between the sealing surfaces. For single-end seals, the sealing medium is usually used as a lubricant. But for toxic, harmful, flammable, explosive, strong corrosive medium selection of double end face or series pump seal, and the medium can be compatible with the sealing liquid as lubrication and coolant.
In order to compensate for wear and manufacturing errors, there should be a sealing surface under the dual action of the elastic element and the pressure of the medium, which can move a certain amount along the axial direction. At the same time, in order to adapt to the shaking caused by the angular deviation of the rotating parts, there should be a sealing end face that can make a small floating in the radial direction. Usually, a sealing surface has both functions.
For the seal of the rotary shaft, the water pump seal is a common seal type. The water pump seal is usually sealed with liquid, such as centrifugal pumps, and is also used for gas seals, such as compressors and stirring devices.
