Because the pump seal has the characteristics of low leakage and no need for routine maintenance, it has been widely replaced by the gland soft packing seal.

Water pump seal generally has two perpendicular to the axis of the rotary shaft sealing plane, so it can also be called "radial face seal", one of the sealing surface components installed in the pump cover, end cover or pump body to remain stationary, the other fixed on the shaft and rotation. The stationary component is called the static ring (also known as the floating ring component in the static water pump seal) and the rotating component is called the moving ring (rotating ring). In order to keep the leakage within a very small range, the grinding flatness tolerance of the rotating ring and the stationary ring end face of the conventional water pump seal is 0.0006 under normal circumstances.

In order to keep the heat and wear of the two surfaces due to friction within the allowable range, there must be a layer of fluid lubrication film between the sealing surfaces. For single-end seals, the sealing medium is usually used as a lubricant, but for toxic, Harmful, flammable, explosive, and strongly corrosive media are selected for double-end or series water pump seals, and the sealing liquid that can dissolve with the medium is used as lubrication and coolant.

In order to compensate for wear and manufacturing errors, there should be a sealing surface under the dual action of elastic elements and medium pressure, which can move a certain amount along the axial direction. At the same time, in order to adapt to the shaking caused by the angular deviation of rotating parts, there should be a sealing end face that can make small floating in the radial direction, usually by a sealing surface with both functions.
